St Peter’s has a reputation for musical excellence and today this is reflected in the contribution made to our worship by our professional mixed choir and organists under the direction of Andrew-John Smith. The choir gives occasional concerts and has worked with numerous distinguished artists and ensembles. We are also home to other choirs and orchestras and a popular musical venue for concerts of many kinds.
The Choir of St Peter’s comprises some of the best young singers in the country. In their careers elsewhere they sing variously across the world with many of the country’s leading vocal groups. At the heart of the choir’s repertory is the exploration of sixteenth century music, but the repertoire of the choir ranges from Dufay through to Stravinsky and Maxwell Davies. Numerous works have been and continue to be written for it.
At the Family Eucharist, the Family Eucharist Choir sings a wide variety of music, old and new, and is open to anyone who would like to join.
In January 2019 we also began a Children's Choir, under the leadership of Fiona Hymns. Fiona is also the family service choir director who works in London as a freelance voice teacher, soloist and choir director. All the children who currently sing in the choir are in years 2-6 and most attend St Peter’s Eaton Square Church of England Primary School. They sing once each month at the Family Eucharist but in December 2019 they also took part in an exciting performance of 'Wassail' at Chingford Parish Church. They have recently restarted since the pandemic and we look forward to regularly hearing them sing.
St Peter's Eaton Square is an outstanding venue for concerts of many kinds. Over the last ten years Eaton Square Concerts hosted two seasons of concerts at St Peter's each year, featuring chamber music and choral music of the highest quality and promoting the work of young musicians. Eaton Square Concerts came to the end of its extraordinary run in 2019, having established the church as a well known destination for music lovers.
Today St Peter's is regularly used by the BBC for concerts, recording and broadcast. We are also home to The Whitehall Choir, and Kensington Philharmonic Orchestra, and regularly welcome other choirs and orchestras, including young musicians from Westminster City Boys School, and the Grey Coat Hospital School.
